I’d like to welcome B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree Janet Leigh today to chat with me about her book, The Shoes Come First. Janet was born in Garland, Texas and has remained a faithful Texas native her entire life.
After practicing chiropractic for twenty years, Janet decided to take a dive into writing her first novel. She has always admired writers that could make her laugh while weaving a magnificent story. Janet was working full time during the day and taking writing classes on the internet at night. “Not the fastest way to learn, but I had some great teachers and mentors,” she says now.
Today, Janet is a practicing chiropractor and acupuncturist. She has three kids, a mean cat and a dog that has allergies. After working all day and chauffeuring kids around at night she likes to relax with a funny romance or mystery novel. Her favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich, Leigh Michaels, Beth Ciotta, John Grisham, and for that time when she needs a good cry, Nicholas Sparks.
Janet works full-time with her chiropractor husband and writes at every opportunity. She hopes her readers enjoy her first book, The Shoes Come First: A Jennifer Cloud Novel. The first book in what Janet hopes to be a funny and engaging series.
Janet lives in Dallas, Texas, where she splits her time between seeing patients and working on her next Jennifer Cloud adventure.
How did you discover indieBRAG?
I discovered indieBRAG by researching ways to market my book. I work full time as a chiropractor/acupuncturist and have very little time left for promoting my book. When I am not working, I am writing, so marketing takes a back seat. I like companies that offer reviews and other avenues for writers to get their books out in the world.
Please tell me about your book, The Shoes Come First.
The Shoes Come First is the first book in the Jennifer Cloud Series. The second book, Dress 2 Impress, is due to release in 2016. Jennifer Cloud is an ordinary woman who was working as an assistant shoe buyer for an upscale shoe franchise, when she discovers (by accident) she has the gift of time travel. Jennifer learns she will be chasing a band of villains back in time to keep them from stealing the precious time travel keys. With the help of a few dysfunctional characters, Jennifer tries to save her family, protect her gift and decide which man holds the key to her heart.
What inspired you to write a romantic comedy? Are there any challenges on writing romantic comedy?
My family inspired me to write romantic comedy. My day job is intense, but my family is full of funny stories. When we get together someone always says we should write these stories down, so I embellished a little and called it fiction.
I find when writing romantic comedy that some things don’t transfer well on paper. I can imagine what my character will do in a certain situation, but finding the words to describe the actions can be challenging. I love books that make me laugh. I can’t wait for my characters to get involved in some sort of predicament, and think up all the crazy ways they try to get out of it.
You have a bit of time travel in your story. Would you tell me a little about that?
The Shoes Come First is not the normal type of time travel novel. I chose to go back to 1568 Scotland and to 1913 Texas to give the book an adventurous tone. My character becomes affiliated with a secret federation that monitors the time travelers. I thought it would be fun to have a brief encounter in different time periods, instead of focusing on one time period. In book 2, Jennifer will travel to the years 1602 and 1985. Comedy is first and foremost in my writing. I wanted the Shoes Come First to be comparable to Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz going back in time.
Will you give me a little background of the three men who try to win her heart?
The three men in The Shoes Come First are the best friend, the sexy racecar driver and the Scottish rogue. The first man, Jake McCoy, is Jennifer’s best friend from grade school. They tried to make a go at a relationship but they both have issues that need some work. The second man, Marco Ferrari, is a sexy racecar driver and has the ability to time travel. Although he avoids the travel federation like the plague, he is drawn to Jennifer and helping her in her quest to save her family. And just to make it interesting, I added a third man, Caiyan McGregor. The rakish Scot makes Jennifer’s toes curl and infuriates her at the same time. He is the incredibly handsome time traveler that even the federation cannot control. Who will win Jennifer’s heart? You will have to read to find out.
Tell me about Gertrude and what is her relationship like with Jennifer?
Gertrude will make you laugh. She is that cousin, the one that always got you in trouble. Jennifer and Gertrude did not live close to each other growing up, but they ran into each other at family functions. They are total opposites and are forced to live together when Jennifer’s parents decide to move to an over fifty active adult community and leave Jennifer to rent the house.
How did you come up with your title?
The title for my book was developed from the fashionista attitude of my main character. I wanted a fun title that would indicate romantic comedy and show my main characters love of fashion. Jennifer’s motto is “a fabulous outfit is designed around a great pair of shoes.”
I find it frustrating when I discover a new series but can’t figure out which order to read the books. I decided the books in my first series would contain the number of the book to make it easier for my readers. We will see how I do with the titles as I get along in the series. I might have to run a contest and get the fans to help out.
Where can reader buy your book?
Who designed your book cover?
CreateSpace designed my book cover. I wanted something simple and different from the bare-chested hunks common on many romance novels. I went with them for the convenience of an all-in-one type of production.
We are delighted that Stephanie has chosen to interview Janet Leigh who is the author of, She Shoes Comes First, our medallion honoree at indieBRAG. To be awarded a B.R.A.G. Medallion TM, a book must receive unanimous approval by a group of our readers.
