Ideal for Hunger Games and Divergent fans, Crystal Marcos delivers Novus, a riveting novel set in a dystopian future of action-adventure, suspense, and romance. Intriguing characters and a gripping storyline keep the reader turning page after page.
Being a teenager is hard enough. And what if your life’s path is predetermined? On top of that, you aren’t even Human?
Cayden was given life as a Cresecren. He expected to live out his days with the dysfunctional Human family he was assigned to serve. One fateful night, however, landed him in Gavaron, the home of maimed, elderly, or defiant Cresecren.
Beyond its borders is the Den, an area much more dangerous than he ever imagined. Now seventeen, Cayden unwittingly becomes involved in a conspiracy and is one of a handful of survivors fleeing a deadly attack. They set off on a perilous journey in search of refuge and the truth. Along the way, Cayden begins to comprehend the difference between fully living and merely surviving, while trying to balance his emotions and a forbidden love.
What is the mood or tone your characters portray and how does this affect the story?
The main concern for the characters in my story is survival. It makes for an exciting tale with twists and turns. It also becomes a learning experience for the characters who encounter new situations and emotions they never experienced before. My readers have said that they cared about the characters and wanted to know what happened to them next. In writing the story, these characters became my friends and I woke every morning wondering what they would be doing. I think this comes across the pages to my readers.
How is your character(s) influenced by their setting?
My characters had to learn to adapt to their constant changes. They had to decide who could be trusted and who couldn’t. It isn’t something people have to deal with on a normal basis. It makes for interesting character development. Where would their next meal come from? Which path should they take? Can they trust the person standing next to them?
What do you like most about writing a dystopian future story?
It is very important for me to develop the world I am writing about. What I enjoyed most about the development was putting myself in the characters shoes. I loved the challenge of imaging what it would be like to have to live like them. I enjoyed the challenge of writing about how each person with their unique personality would react in any given situation.
Where can readers buy your book?
You can see options and buy signed copies on my website
It is also available in both paperback and eBook at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, iBooks, Kobo, and other major retailers. You can also always check if your local library carries it and put in a request it if it does not.
What is your current book project?
I am currently working on a picture book project with my sister who is an illustrator. I am hoping for it to be released before the end of the year, rhyming picture books are much more of a challenge than I anticipated! I am very excited about this one! I have a personal connection with why I wrote the book. I cannot wait to release it into the little hands of the ones I wrote it for!
