I’ve gotten several ARC to review in the last couple of weeks and I am really looking forward to diving into them. Today, I thought I would share three of the stories I will be reading and reviewing soon. As you can see, it’s a broad range of reading material here. Enjoy!

My thoughts:

This story was one I almost did not finish. I had some issues with it but I rallied on. First I’d like to mention what I did not like about it and then get on to the not so great things.

I did like the dual timelines of the present and past. I felt that was nicely done and helps the mysterious aspects of the story along. The idea of a woman buying a house that was once a Convent to turn it into a bed & breakfast is pretty interesting. There were parts to the story that was chilling, atmospheric and had “some” tension. However, I do need to mention I did get a bit spooked in certain scenes. That was cool. Do these things alone give it a high rating for me? The answer is no. There were too many other issues with the story.

First off, the characters are clearly older than twenty but the story and the character’s language feels a bit-young adult like to me. As I said above, there were parts of the story where there was tension but it wasn’t built up enough to make it powerful-if you will. The plot line of the “a terrible fate” of the nuns was not strong enough to me. Too wishy washy. Which is disappointing because that could have been really fantastically gruesome. There are a few details about the plot that needed to be fleshed out more and wasn’t. Details I can’t mention without spoilers.

I really wanted this story to grab me but it didn’t happen. I did sympathize with Kate somewhat. To a point. The other characters were not remarkable. I am-actually-really shocked I continued to read the story. But in a way I am glad I did. The second half of the story became more interesting and the dialogue got a little better. Just a little.

I am rating the overall story two and a half stars.

I am rating the cover, four stars.

Today, I’m sharing a few bookish things that have been going on this week from my fellow book bloggers, indieBRAG and myself at Layered Pages. We are completely drawn into the world of stories and the people who write them. Our passion is to share our love of reading, good reads and our hunt for them. Daily we are exploring social media and various book sites for the next great read. In this post, I will share some posts highlights and events happening this week from the people I mentioned above.

This week at Layered Pages, I have created several posts but I would like to highlight my Wish-List 5: Dublin Murder Squad. Take a look at the post here and be sure to check out my other post this week! Lots of great books mentioned.

Right now I am reading several books. One of them is a buddy read and I wonder if we are ever going to be able to finish it! The book is, To Capture What We Cannot Keep by Beatrice Colin. We recently finished buddy reading, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (I have LOTs to say about this book!). I am still reading Lincoln’s Autocrat (The Life of Edwin Stanton) by William Marvel, The Civil War Source Book by Philip Katcher (I’m having issues with some of the content but it’s interesting), Yesternight by Cat Winters (almost done) and recently started, The Good Sisters by Helen Phifer. This latest book I started is for review and I will be through with it this week. I know, it’s a lot of reading material to read at once but I am able to keep up with it and I can’t help myself.

My thoughts on the premise, title and cover jacket:

Often times throughout history, women were overlooked in the roles they played and the impact they had. It’s writers like, Melissa Lukeman Bohrer who bring to light strong women in our history. For those of you who have studied in-depth about the American Revolution, you know the part many women were involved in. Which was a big part! Glory, Passion, and Principle honors women mentioned above in the book description.

The title of the story REALLY stands out to me. Glory, passion and principle were among the strong traits of people during that time who had a belief in freedom, a pursuit of happiness of faith, family, and their country.

What can I say about the cover? It speaks for itself in many ways. Look how the woman is standing strong and showing her fight for the cause she believes in. I love the richness in the colors used and dramatic feel. The cover really gives you a sense of the period. Nicely done.

An Oldie but Goodie

me-ii Last week I thought I would start an Oldie but Goodie Series of older book reviews that I had previously written. Since it has gone well so far, I thought I would go ahead and post another one sooner than I planned. It’s great fun to look back at older reviews. Or maybe sometimes it’s not? *laughing* Though I have to say in the review below my opinions are still the same of Equilibrium and I like what I wrote just fine. Review: Equilibrium by Evie Woolmore

Equilibrium is an evocative tale of two Sisters-Epiphany and Martha-who are mediums performing on stage in a theater in London, England in the early 1900’s. A Lady Adelia Lyward sees the performance and wants Epiphany to give her a private reading. She wanted to learn the truth of her brother’s death not knowing the sisters have a connection to her household. Martha was a housemaid to the Lyward’s two years previous and fell pregnant by Adelia’s husband, Lord Rafe Lyward. In disgrace Martha left the Lyward’s household, gave her child away and attempted suicide in the River Thames, she survived… But there is more to the Lyward’s household then meets the eye.

The beginning of the story starts slowly but I was pleasantly surprised as I read on to discover how the mystery surrounding Adelia’s brother’s death is revealed. However, I would have liked to have seen the historical elements to be stronger and expanded further on-such as the social changes in England during this period and I wanted to have a clearer picture on the details as to why Adelia’s brother went to South Africa during the Boer War then what was told.

Overall, this story is rich in complex characters with remarkable depth despite their shortcomings. Epiphany’s voice gave- what I believe- a comfort to those she was interacting with at times and I thought she gave the story a calmness and a delicate reality to this tragic and harsh story that was unfolding. I recommend Equilibrium to readers who enjoys historical fiction with spiritualism influences.

Wish-List 5: Dublin Murder Squad

I have a strong interest in crime thrillers, and mystery. It’s not often I have the time to really dive into the genre. Though I must admit, this year I’ve read more crime thrillers than I have in recent years. There have been some truly great ones that have been published of late. I believe I came across this crime thriller on Facebook. I have seen, In the Woods quite often and never really looked into it. Until now.

Broken Harbor (Dublin Murder Squad #4) by Tana French

A War So Terrible and The Reconstruction of the South

One of the writing projects I am working on is an historical thriller that takes place in the present and the past in Atlanta and Madison, Georgia. The story of the past centers around the town of Madison and two families shortly after the civil war, continuing through the new century. This era is known as the Reconstruction of the South. The present story is of a young woman who lives in Atlanta and is connected to those two families of the past in more ways than she could have ever imagined.

My research has not only taken me to the Reconstruction era but many years prior to the civil war. The deeper I go the more I am discovering about how this war is so much more complex than many have ever explored.

Though my story is a work of fiction, I will have many themes and content in the story that are factual. Often times those themes will be uncomfortable but one I am hoping will bring to light to the many attitudes of that period that people today do not want to face or talk about. My research is to understand and my writing is to explore the motivations and the human condition during the hardships from all of the people.

The books below are the current research books I will be diving into this week.

Women of the South in War Times by Matthew Page Andrews

It may truly be said of the Southern women of 1861-1865 that the simple narrative of their life and work unfolds a record of achievement, endurance, and self-sacrificing devotion that should be revealed and recognized as a splendid inspiration to men and women everywhere. The stories contained in this volume depict the life of the Southern people, particularly the women, within the lines of the Confederacy during the four years of its turbulent existence.

When I was a slave (Memoirs from the Slave Narrative Collection) Edited by Norman R. Yetman

In an effort to provide unemployed writers with work during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the United States Government, through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), funded the Federal Writers’ Project. One of the group’s most noteworthy and enduring achievements was the Slave Narrative Collection, consisting of more than 2,000 transcripts of interviews with former slaves, who, in blunt, simple words, provided often-startling first-person accounts of their lives in bondage. This book reprints some of the most detailed and engrossing life histories in the collection. Each narrative is complete.
Thirty-four gripping testimonies are included, with all slave occupations represented — from field hand and cook to French tutor and seamstress. Personal treatment reported by these individuals also encompassed a wide range — from the harshest and exploitative to living and working conditions that were intimate and benevolent.
An illuminating and unique source of information about life in the South before, during, and after the Civil War, these memoirs, most importantly, preserve the opinions and perspective of those who were enslaved. Invaluable to students, teachers, and specialists in Southern history, this compelling book will intrigue anyone interested in the African-American experience.

On the threshold of Freedom by Clarence L. Mohr

In this enlightening study, Clarence L. Mohr follows the demise of chattel slavery in one state of the Confederate South. Like the slavery regime itself, Mohr’s story is biracial in character, embracing the perspectives of both blacks and whites as they struggled to comprehend the approach of black freedom within a framework of attitudes and assumptions shaped by decades of mutual exposure to Georgia’s peculiar institution. By exploring in detail the changing patterns of black-white interaction that preceded legal emancipation in 1865, On the Threshold of Freedom defines central tendencies within Georgia slavery and suggests important links between antebellum life and the events of early Reconstruction.

First, I would like to mention a few things that are happening at Layered Pages and what I have been posting about this week. My highlight for the week is my Oldie but Goodie post. I love reading my older reviews! I learn a lot from them and how my writing has developed.

Cover Crush: The Widow’s War by Sally Cabot Gunning

My thoughts on the title, cover and premise:

I’ve said this before and I will say it again. I am not a cover designer but I can agree that cover layouts play an important role in the overall presentation of books and I must admit I first judge a book by its cover.

I am really into American History and love discovering Historical Fiction writers tell stores in this genre. All scopes of our history fascinates me. Especially 17^th,18^th and 19^th Century America. There is a really great conversation going on in the Historical Novel Society Facebook Group about American Historical Fiction at the moment. There IS a readership for and many wish to see more US Publishers pick up the genre. There is no doubt our history is exciting and has impacted the world. In my wish-list post coming up next week, I will talk more about that.

The title, The Widow’s War first captured my attention and I began to closely observe the cover art. Of course it shows this story is a period piece of a woman who name could be Lyddie-like the protagonist in the story. You can sense her struggles but see her strengths.

I really like the use of colors in the cover art and the subtle dramatic feel to it. This book is on my wish-list and I look forward to reading it soon!

Book Hangover

Is there a definition for a book hangover? Though book enthusiast know exactly what it is. For the fun of it I decided to google the meaning and see if there was an official one. Low and behold there is a lot on this subject. Here is a blog I discovered who posts about the subject which pretty much sums it up.

“A book hangover is condition in which attachment to a book or series that has ended causes the reader traumatic emotional distress. It usually lasts for one to two weeks, or until a new book of higher-than-average quality enters the reader’s life.” –Epic Reads

While Epic Reads list great treatments for a book hangover, I have come up with my own. They are as follow:

Though you probably have thousands of books on your shelf to read. Don’t let that stop you from heading to your local bookstore! I find browsing the shelves helps inspire fresh and new stories to read.
Check out what your fellow readers or book bloggers are reading.
Watch a TV series or movie in your area of interest and that might give you a light bulb moment as to what to read next! Netflix or Amazon Video is always helpful in that area.
Pick five of your already owned books and read the first two chapters of each book. See what grabs you.
A good rant to your bookish friends might do the trick.
Eat large quantities of your favorite chocolate. How does this help, you ask? Well, it’s chocolate. It cures everything. Need I say more?
