I have dozens and dozens of magazines and catalogs that I’ve harvested for images. Once I was done with them, I couldn’t bring myself to throw them away. They still had quite a few pages in them. I’ve been trying to decide what I want to do with them and recently I came across a Youtuber who makes mini glue books out of them. I was thrilled to discover Nicole’s channel! I did know other ways to create with them but I wasn’t thrilled with the sizes nor did I feel inspired. Making mini glue books out of them is such an inspiring idea, a way to use your scraps, and they make great travel companions!
But what is a glue book exactly? A glue book is a collage journal. You take any book you to glue any sort of images, everyday items and pattern papers to the pages. Anything goes, really and you can create any sort of theme or no theme if you so desire. I love this way of creating. It is so relaxing and freeing! I’ve decided to use this glue book for random layouts for inspiration.
Nicole’s instructions on how to turn a magazine into a glue book is easy to follow. She has two videos for you to watch. If you have limited time, she has a short video on how to fold & cut the magazine, but I highly recommend watching both.

I started working this journal page on August 10th-I believe- and I really didn’t have a set plan on where I wanted it to take me. I knew I wanted to paint abstract flowers in a field. It was a rocky start so I put the pages aside for a bit to get back to center. We all have days like that.
I decided not to put windows on the lower part of the house nor the back fields or detail to the gazebo. I wanted some quirky feel to it. To open the mind to a story of one’s own imagination. The sky and back fields represent a dust storm settling and draws your attention to the front fields of abstract flowers. This piece has inspired a much larger abstract I want to paint on canvas.
This is the most paint I’ve ever put on book pages before. The paper held up great! I wish you could see these pages in person. I couldn’t quote seem to capture the vibrant colors with my phone camera. All in all, I’m pleased with the pages and this project turned out to be an eye-opening experience in painting abstract flowers. I’m used to just drawing life-like ones then painting or coloring them. A new art journey begins…
The Cover: I’m crazy about the color blue! That is what first caught my attention about this cover. I might have design the cover layout itself a little different to give it a more Gothic feel to it. The cover almost looks Cartoonist to me. Having said that, I love the color, as I said above, the wallpaper, arch way and the clock! The cover has actually inspired me to create an art piece using some influence of the layout.
Last Friday my Father brought me a copy of National Geographic, “Founding Fathers” edition. I was quote surprised and overjoyed! I love U.S. History and thought it was cool my Father thought of me when he came across this magazine. At first, I flipped through the pages and liked what I saw. There are several articles and stunning images. There are also three titles history book titles on the back that I want to check out.
My Father pulled at my heart strings with this treasure. Every night since, I read an article and closely examine the images. There are a lot of information I’m learning or had forgotten. A few of the images has inspired me to create art based on our countries history.
What has always impressed upon me about our Founding Fathers, is that despite the fact they were all different in many ways, they shared a common ideology. A government for the people and by the people. An idea that no other country had been able to do before. These men came together knowing it was treason to go up against the crown-with courage-fought for the very freedoms we hold dear today.
